For the sale price - worth it.

The cabinet is sturdy, functional, and a decent piece of furniture. There were two issues relating to finish and condition of the product. First condition - while it was well packed and the box had no visible signs of damage, there was a splinter of wood broken off the back edge and two areas where the finish was rubbed a little raw. Secondly, the top decorative edge on one side had what appeared to be an overuse of glue or putty and restained without properly sanding. Because the splintered piece was in the back where it wouldn't be seen, the two raw areas easily touched-up, and the top edge seam looked a bit like the older, distressed furniture surrounding this cabinet, it was not worth going through the hassle of a return. If not for these, it would be a five star.

In short: This cabinet's attractive design, rich wood finish, and utility outweighed its cosmetic blemishes and somewhat rough drawer suspension. At about $165, the HomeStar Knob Hill Collection two-drawer wooden file cabinet appears to be a good value for daily filing at home.Pros:1. The cabinet is made of solid wood, not compressed sawdust.2. The finish has a beautiful, warm color and nice luster.3. Assembly was simple. The single page of instructions was accurate and fairly complete. The only tool needed is a medium-tipped Phillips screwdriver. Pilot holes and countersinks are pre-drilled for all 34 wood screws.4. The drawers have hanging-folder rails on all top edges, so they hold either legal-size or letter-size hanging folders.5. The drawers slide open on metal tracks with rollers.6. The drawer tracks have a slight curve, which appears to help keep the drawers shut in case the floor underneath is not level.Cons (our unit):1. One drawer moves a bit roughly. The suspension is not as elaborate as the ball-bearing suspensions on the Hon file cabinets in my office.2. The other drawer moves very roughly unless pushed to one side as it's being opened.3. The outside wood had some cosmetic imperfections. Several groups of tiny dimples looked as if they had been stomped before staining by a Lilliputan golfer wearing tiny spiked shoes. The top had a hair-thin three-inch black line, apparently a small scratch that had been expertly repaired and finished. The dimples were very inconspicuous, even up close. The scratch was noticeable only within about four to six feet.4. The pre-drilled pilot holes for mounting two metal L-brackets were slightly out of place.5. Assembly instructions lacked an important tip. See below.Assembly tips:1. Important! The sides of the drawers have pre-attached metal rails. Each rail has a roller. When assembling the drawers, make sure their rollers are at the rear, not the front.2. The only tool you'll need is a medium-tipped Phillips screwdriver. Also handy are a carpeted surface and either bright lighting or an assistant with a flashlight.3. The instructions say to drive the cabinet's 34 wood screws by hand. If you use a power tool, dial in a very light setting on the torque clutch.4. When installing the two metal L-brackets inside the cabinet, note that one goes at the bottom left and the other goes at the top right. Look for the pre-drilled pilot holes.

Beautiful and functional. Great Bargain

What an awesome file cabinet. It's a beautiful piece of furniture and it's not made of that horrible pressed board either. Was fairly easy to assemble and it's a wonderful addition to my decor. Very strong and plenty of file space. Perfect to put anywhere especially if you don't have a dedicated office area. It's really a perfect solution to file storage.
