Never carry house keys again.
By Keith Jenkin
We now have these on all of our external doors. (Five now; first three installed three years ago and still working fine and look great.) I'm the kind that 1. "Forgets" to lock up when I go out, even for a minute or two (which my wife really rags me about). And 2. Forgets to bring a house key often, say out walking the dog, returning to find the doors all locked (wife again). With this cipher lock the house is NEVER unlocked; and I NEVER get locked out. Wonderful for my rather impatient self. You would think having to key in a cipher for each opening is a hassle. Not so, after a few openings you don't even have to look at the pad, your fingers remember the pattern and boink, the door opens almost instantly. You can change the cipher code whenever desired and even have multiple codes. Like a temporary one, say for a handyman (woman) working for you, then delete that code when he (she) is finished.Schlage has made these for quite some time and they're top quality. Note that there are different "colors" (finishes) available, a variety of handle styles (surf if Amazon doesn't carry your favorite), and at least two variations in the operating mechanism available also. The "Flex-Lock" kind means you can set the lockset to "Unlocked" occasionally so no need to key in the code every time you enter. This is really handy if you're running in and out constantly, like to unload groceries, do yard work with several "refreshment" breaks or whatever. Just remember to flip the lever knob (on the inside) back to normal (always locked). The "Auto-Lock" version is a little cheaper, but has no unlocked option. A bit less convenient but this assures that the lockset is ALWAYS locked and no need to remember to toggle that lever knob back when you're done mowing the lawn. Great for paranoid types. And also note that a traditional bolt lock can be used with these (in a second hole above in the door), for double security, say, when going on a vacation (but then you must carry a key). And exiting from inside the door is ALWAYS UNLOCKED, for convenience and safety.Considering what amounts to eliminating a source of worry and a string of "my bad" excuses for me, these things are a bargain. The 9V battery lasts for YEARS. Installation is a piece of cake using only a Phillips-head screwdriver. The standard doorknob door holes are used; no mods to the door itself or the jam needed. Amazon, of course, has the righteous price and speedy delivery as usual. If you do surf elsewhere for this product you will see a huge span of prices ranging from full retail to less than half that (Amazon and a couple of others).

Schlage keypad entry
By Brian
We have been using this at work now for about 6 months and it works great. Numbers are easy to see and buttons are firm so you know when you push them. Lever handle works easily. This is installed on a outside door that faces west with about a 4' overhang protecting it. It will get blasted with snow and rain when the wind whips up, so I would rate it as mildly protected setting. Commercial use so it gets used everyday, all day long at a small factory with about 12 employees. One nice thing about this is if you unlock it from the inside, it deactivates the lock so it can be used as an unlocked door. Turn the lever inside, and it locks again so anyone leaving can lock the door without a code.Very happy, looks good, installed easy, still first set of batteries.update March 2013: after two years the lock stopped locking. Batteries were good and you could hear the mechanism moving inside, but it would always open from the outside. installed a new one and took the old one apart. Sure enough, the little pin that slides back and forth to engage the lever "cogs" had broken. the end had popped off so the retracting spring was loose inside the lock. With no spring, the pin would not retract. Took it apart, epoxied the head back on the pin, straightened the now bent spring and put it back together. Works perfect now. This is an industrial setting, so it gets used A LOT! I would still recommend it.
