A great balance between control and durability
By John Togasaki
First off, if you don't break strings, then this string probably isn't the one for you. There are other strings that are cheaper and offer greater feel for the ball. On the other hand, if you are an advanced player or one who breaks strings often, read on.The Luxilon Big Banger ALU Power is one of the most durable strings I've used, and I've experimented with many strings. Most durable strings have terrible feel and I end up cutting them out even before they break because they feel so bad and I can't control my shots at the level I'm used to. This string, however, has excellent feel to complement its durability. If you are buying the reel, then you probably string your own rackets, so I'll talk a little about the characteristics of the string while stringing. As soon as you start stringing a racket with this string, you'll notice that it's different than other strings. While most strings are very elastic and stretch while you apply tension, this string stretches very little. It takes a couple of string jobs to get used to stringing this string. Because it stretches very little, you have to make sure to use an adequate length of string for the job.The nice thing about getting a reel is that you can get an extra string job or two out of a reel vs. the same length of string sold as individual sets. This is because you can cut exactly the amount of string you need from a reel, while a set comes pre-cut with a little extra length to make sure you have enough for all racket types. With the Luxilon, you have to be careful and add an extra foot or two (depending on your racket and stringing machine) because the string won't stretch to the same length when tension is applied. The stiffness of the string definitely makes it a bit harder to string, and you also have to be careful that the string doesn't kink. If it gets even slightly tangled, it can kink, so you have to be more careful than with a regular string. Once you get used to stringing Luxilon, it really isn't that bad.The stiffness of the string also translates to the feel of the string when strung. It feels very stiff when you hit the strings with the heel of your hand, but when you actually hit the ball on the sweet spot, the string feels much softer than expected. The Luxilon gives you excellent control for such a stiff string. The first time I used it, I was worried that I wouldn't have any control, but I found that my shots were falling in very accurately, and that I was getting a little more depth than usual.I also found that the Luxilon lasted three to four times as long as other strings like Gamma XL, Gamme Livewire, Technifibre NRG2, and Babolat Fiber Ace. It was a great combination of very good playability with amazing durability.Although Luxilon has very good feel, it still didn't have quite the feel of the other strings I mentioned, but I found a solution to that -- hybrid stringing. If I strung the main strings with Luxilon and the cross strings with a higher performing string, I would get playability like the better string, and it would last longer. With most string jobs, the main strings are the first to break, but by stringing the mains with Luxilon, the cross strings would always break first, meaning even the higher performing strings would last longer than usual. Since you string the mains before the crosses, you can clamp the racket in the stringing machine, cut out the crosses, and restring just the crosses, leaving the Luxilon mains in there for another use. I can usually go through three sets of crosses before the Luxilon mains break, saving even more money, by only using two sets of string for every three string jobs.My current favorite combination is Luxilon mains with Gamma Livewire crosses. I string the Luxilon mains about 10% looser than my normal tension (that's what they recommend due to the lower elasticity) and the Gamma crosses at my normal tension (67 lbs). I actually like the feel of this combination better than either all Luxilon or all Livewire. Stringing with hybrid string jobs using Luxilon for the mains is pretty popular now here in Northern California, and I recommend it to many tournament players and people who frequently break their strings.
