5Functional elegance
By louienapoli
Lamy specializes in highly functional, esthetically-splendid pens and pencils and the Dialog 2, which was designed by Knud Holscher, exemplifies the Lamy style. At 5 and 3/4 inches, it's noticeably longer than a lot of other pens, and much heavier, with a heft that's beautifully balanced so the pen glides across the page without fatiguing my hand. The pen is beautiful to look at, with a Lamy-esque futuristic but timeless look. The big selling point, though, seems to be the gimmicky retractable pocket clip.Unlike most rollerballs the Dialog is capless. You extend or retract the point by turning the barrel. And when you extend the point, the clip retracts so it lies flush against the pen, presumably, according to the Lamy website, for your comfort. In fact, there's virtually no way on a pen of this length that your hand would come into contact with the clip while writing, so comfort is not an issue, whether the clip is retracted or protruding. Also, the clip is not really strong enough to keep the pen in your pocket if you bend over to pick up change or tie your shoe. The real deal with the clip is that it's just really cool to watch it retract and extend. Otherwise, it's pretty useless, though of course it will keep the pen locatable in your breast pocket. The Dialog takes Lamy's capless rollerball refills, which come in a variety of colors, and they're good, though their ink flow tends to be copious when freshly installed. The good news is that they don't just stop writing to let you know you're out of ink. They gradually taper off, producing ever finer, lighter lines until you figure out that it's time for a fresh cartridge.I have the Lamy 2000 series--roller ball, pencil, ball point, fountain pen--and I love it. It has supplanted my other, fancier, pricier pens. The Dialog 2 is a great addition. It has the advantage of the great heft and balance, the cool-looking brushed stainless finish, and of course the clip which can provide hours of amusement to take the edge off of long flights, train rides, etc. I highly recommend it. At approx [...] it's far cheaper than the gilded, gaudy Mont Blancs and Duponts, and much much cooler.

3For the price it's okay
By Mc
I've had many fancy pens but I was quite disappointed with this one. It's a great pen overall but not for me and I am rating/reviewing as it fits me. The grip tapers too much in my opinion and I had a hard time holding it comfortably. I prefer the grip of the Pilot Vanish point or Fermo. Also, the ink cartridge for this is quite bold in my opinion, which some people may like but I prefer a finer tip. The clip on mine was off centered so that whenever you used the clip it would land on the outside of the nook made for the clip. This may not be a big deal but for a $100 pen, I kind of expected it to be perfect. The material feels very solid though and this pen may be for you even if it isn't for me.
