Good alternative to antique hand grinders

This makes a good alternative to refurbishing an antique hand grinder. However, it is still a bit of a "kit" if you are looking to use this to hollow grind chisels and plane blades.1) The wheel that comes with the grinder is much too small and narrow to be of use for grinding chisels and plane blades. Replace it with a 6" coarse grid wheel.2) BUT when replacing the wheel with a 6" wheel, be aware that a 6" wheel will not fit, it is too large of a diameter. You need to find a way to turn the wheel down to about 5-1/2" diameter. One possibility is to find somebody with a 6" electric grinder and simply buy or trade for their old wheel. Otherwise, it takes just a few minutes to use a diamond dressing tool to work down a 6" wheel to 5-1/2" using an electric grinder.3) The tool rest is too short. Replace it with a home-made one from some angle iron.So, for $60 plus the cost of a new coarse 6" wheel (about $10 at the hardware store) plus another $5 of angle iron, you can have a pretty decent hand grinder for chisels and plane blades. Vintage ones are still going for $35 or less but most require more work and often a new wheel and tool rest anyway. So you can trade a bit of money to save a bit of time if restoring old tools isn't your thing.
