5Try the Advanced Allergen filter if you have allergies or pets
By Paul Moskowitz
My house uses forced air for heating. The disadvantage of such a system is that it distributes the dust in the air everywhere in the house. However, it is supposed to be possible to filter out the dust. Over the years, I have steadily increased the quality of the filter that I use for my forced air heating system. However, until now I have not noticed any obvious difference in my allergic reactions that seem to start with the heating season. There are two cats in my house. I have read that cat dander, tiny flakes of cat skin shed by the cats, is five times smaller than household dust particles. It stays in the air much longer than ordinary dust before it settles. Because of its small size it requires a more efficient filter to get it out of the air.Until this year, I have used of variety of filters with mixed results. However, this year, I started using the 3M Advanced Allergen Filters, the ones in the blue wrapper. These have a 3M Microparticle Performance Rating of 1500, but do not have a MERV rating listed. MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value and is a number from 1 to 12, produced from a test designed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). A higher MERV rating indicates better filter performance. 3M uses particle data between 0.3 and 1.0 micron size to calculate a Microparticle Performance Rating or MPR. The higher the MPR, the better the filter. However, higher rated filters cost more. Here are some of the Filtrete filters offered by 3M:Dust & Pollen Filter, Microparticle Performance Rating 600,MERV rating of 8Micro Allergen Filter, Microparticle Performance Rating 1000,MERV rating of 11Ultra Allergen Filter, Microparticle Performance Rating 1250,MERV rating of 11Advanced Allegen Filter, Microparticle Performance Rating 1500,MERV rating not availableThe difference made by the Advanced filter was immediately obvious. My running nose stopped running. I assume that the new Advanced filters must be taking out more of the dust in the air including the cat dander. I have not noticed a change in the speed of the circulated air. The additional cost of the Advanced filter is worth it if you have allergies or pets. However, if you are happy with a lower-rated and lower-cost filter, then you can continue using that one. I suggest that you check Amazon and vendors on the web to get the best price.

5Best Filtrete Ever
By Thomas Huber
The Filtrete Advanced Allergen filter is one of 3M's top-of-the-line furnace filter, better even than their highly regarded Ultra Allergen filter. It works fantastic. The frame is made from very stiff cardstock, and the media is enclosed in a wire mesh. I've been using Filtrete filters for about 10 years, after a cheap fiberglass filter and a "premium" Lysol Elite filter got sucked into the furnace. The Advanced Allergen filter is my current favorite. My wife and I both have allergies. This filter prevents us sneezing during the ragweed and leaf mold seasons.

1restricts airflow, shuts down furnace, could damage equipment
By Terra Nova
I wanted better filtration because of allergies. Thought I'd try the Filtrete 1700 (blue package), the Max-Allergen BEST FILTER (with the 1700 rating).Slapped it in and the house just would not get warm or stay warm. We punched the temperature up a little Still not feeling warm. Then the furnace actually SHUT DOWN. I pulled the Filtrete filter and everything started working again.Strange.Called 3M Filtrete customer service. Explained the situation. We have a newer two-speed 80% efficiency furnace. They were mystified. They suggested I replace the filter. I explained that you could still see sunlight through the filter, it was only slightly dirty. But I went out and bought another one anyway.Things seemed a little better (no furnace shut down) but it was still much cooler in the house. The furnace didn't seem to be doing its job very well. Pulled the Filtrete 1700 and put back the old washable electrostatic filter I'd used for years. Twenty minutes later the house feels much warmer and airflow is significantly better.Side note: When I put the old filter back in, the furnace felt much warmer than usual. I am convinced that the filter was significantly restricting airflow and would eventually cause it to be damaged. I doubt the damage would have been just to the blower motor. I am concerned that it could also damage the heat exchanger, because of the additional call for heat that the furnace could NOT deliver with the Filtrete filter in place. Crack a heat exchanger and you stand the risk of poisoning your family with CO2 fumes. To say that I am uneasy about using Filtrete is an understatement.
