- Bristle and Nylon tufts: This mixture is a good combination for thick or long hair. It is the ideal brush for anyone just becoming accustomed to brushing his or her hair.
- Brushing the hair cleans and polishes it and stimulates the scalp all at once. And brushing is a wonderful conditioning treatment as it not only distributes oil along the entire hair shaft but gets rid of any scaly particles as well. This is the way to brush: ideally, bend from the waist. Brush from the scalp to the ends of the hair in long, slow, firm strokes, touching the scalp each time with the bristles of the brush.

Some things really are worth the money!

A lot of products are pricey just for the name attached. This is not one of those products. I had read so many reviews on these brushes in top magazines as well as how stylists rave over them, it made me more than curious. I have long hair and it can be hard to get out all the tangles when it's wet with regular brushes. Even wide tooth combs are difficult and uncomfortable! So I splurged. That was 8 years ago. My brush is still like new and I would NEVER use another brush in it's place. It's the only brush I have ever tried that goes through my hair like butter, weather it's tangled or not. When I go to the salon to get highlighted, the towel dry that comes after the rinse makes my hair REALLY notty and tangled. The colorist sends an assistant to help get them out bit by bit and it hurts! One day I thought, why do I put myself through that time & discomfort.. I'll just bring my brush. Well I did.. and I let the assistant who usually takes about 15 minutes to detangle my hair regularly use it and she was done in like a minute. No joke. She even asked what kind of brush I had brought that had made it so easy to brush through. In any case.. think of how many brushes you may go through in 10-15 years Cause this is one of those times where you will make out in the long run because you'll have this for a long, long time and absolutely love it. Some advice if you buy one though... if you put product in your hair.. use an additional brush to comb it through. You don't want build up beaking down the materials in this brush at that price. When you clean it, don't dip the actual brush in water either... you need to dry clean it with the little black brush it came with and then occasionally dip that cleaning brush in warm soapy water (non -detergant) and then brush the bristles with the cleaning brush. Rinse the bristles with the cleaning brush also and let it air dry not towel dry. These minor upkeeps will keep this expensive brush around for a long time and I can't imagine anyone not feeling satisfied with it. The combination of boar bristle & nylon also keeps my hair really shiny. Hope if you've decided to get one, you get as much use out of it as I do. I have the Nylon & Bristle Junior and I think I paid around $80 for it then in Nordstroms.

*****This is a review for a Junior (medium-size) Mason Pearson brush made of seven rings of mixed boar bristle and nylon. The longer bristles are nylon and the shorter ones are boar bristle. It is a beautiful heirloom brush worth every penny of the incredibly high price.All of the larger Mason Pearson brushes, including this one, come with a cleaning brush, so that you can easily clean loose hairs out of your brush.There are two things you need to know when you're ready to buy a Mason Pearson brush of any sort. One is the size: full-size (the largest size), handy (medium sized), or pocket (the smallest size). This is important not so much because of where the brush will be kept (say, in your handbag), but because of the bristle length of the various sizes. The smaller sizes have shorter bristles. The bristles have to be able to reach your scalp, and massage it and distribute the oils throughout your hair. If you want a small brush but you have thick or long hair, you'd do better with a larger size.The other consideration is the bristle type. Do you want a mixed bristle brush like this one that is part boar bristle and part nylon? What is most comfortable and performs the best with your hair. This mixed bristle brush will work well for you if your hair is fine to normal and not too long or too thick. Otherwise, you'll need to go with the Detangler because the bristles are stiffer and can reach down through all of your hair to the scalp; the Detangler is the only Mason Pearson brush that can reach the scalp of extremely thick hair. Mason Pearson also makes an All Boar Bristle Brush for finer or shorter hair but I have never tried it.So, this mixed bristle brush is for normal, finer, and shorter hair. I bought it for myself but my husband uses it; although I have short hair it is very thick and straight and coarse and the brush bristles won't reach all the way to my scalp, but slides over the top hairs. My husband loves it dearly though, and really enjoys using it himself, or as a special treat, allowing me to brush his hair. This makes the expense of a Mason Pearson brush well worth the money--it's a luxury item and the purchase is an investment--but it's worth it. If you're the type of person who would rather enjoy an evening at home having your hair brushed by your spouse instead of going to dinner and a movie, then you can justify the cost. My friends jokingly call it my hundred dollar hairbrush, which isn't far from the truth. In my lower-middle class circle of friends, I have been mocked and stared at incredulously. I bought it in a moment of self indulgence about 8 years ago, but have never regretted it. I have used it almost every day since then. This brush is wonderful for distributing oil along the strands. It makes my hair so shiny! The nylon bristles reach through to the scalp while the boar bristles smooth the top layer of hair. I definitely recommend the combo of nylon and boar bristles for thicker hair. This brush makes great sleek and smooth pony tails. It also works well for gently brushing out the surface layer after teasing hair. The size is called "medium", but it's plenty large enough for all but the longest locks. I would love to have a smaller one for my purse. It's definitely an extravagant amount of money to spend on a brush, but I know this brush will last my lifetime and recommend it to anyone willing and able to splurge for beauty.
